Pine River Arts – Where Arts Shine Bright – formed in 2018 with the mission to inspire, enrich and develop the arts in the Pine River Valley and to make Bayfield the one of the most vibrant arts communities in rural Colorado.
The goal of Pine River Arts is to create and promote both performance and educational opportunities in and around the Bayfield area at venues including, but not limited to the Pine River Library, Bayfield Library Park and the Bayfield High School Performing Arts Center as well as Bayfield Town Park. Partnerships are developing with established community arts organizations in La Plata County to bring programs and performances to Bayfield, Colorado.
Shelley Walchak, Director of Pine River Library, initiated the project and leads a group of arts enthusiasts by programming and fundraising with volunteers providing marketing, event coordination and fundraising assistance. “This is what the community was asking us for,” said Shelley, “It’s really been a very rewarding project,” Walchak added. “Everybody is so excited about bringing the arts to the Pine River Valley.”
In these last few years Shelley has published her own book, “52 Rivers: a Woman’s Fly Fishing Journey” where she traveled the country fly-fishing. She says, “It wasn’t just self-discovery. I’d been a librarian my whole life, everything to do with books except publishing one.” She also discovered a love of photography during her travels and has received several awards for her photos. They are a major part of her book, which also has won three awards.
